The Fundamentals of
Microsoft Word

  1. Open Microsoft Word.  Go to the Start Menu and move your mouse up to Programs.  Locate Microsoft Word and click one on it.

  2. A fresh blank page will open and be called Document 1.

  3. Familiarize yourself with the look and feel of this application.  Click here for a detailed description the different portions of the MS Word screen.

  4. You will see a flashing line at the top right hand side of the screen.  This is where you type.  Start by typing the line - This is where you type in text.

  5. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document.

  6. Type the sentence - This is how you make text bold.

  7. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.

  8. Click the button on the toolbar that says B.  You can also hit the Cntrl and B keys on your keyboard.  This will make the text bold.

  9. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document

  10. Click the B button on the toolbar (or hit the Cntrl and B keys) to turn off the bold.

  11. Type the sentence - This is how you italicize text.

  12. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.

  13. Click the button on the toolbar that says I.  You can also hit the Cntrl and I keys on your keyboard.  This will italicize your text

  14. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document
  15. Click the I button on the toolbar (or hit the Cntrl and I keys) to turn off the Italics.
  16. Type the sentence - This is how you underline text.

  17. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  18. Click the button on the toolbar that says U.  You can also hit the Cntrl and U keys on your keyboard.  This will underline your text.

  19. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document
  20. Click the U button on the toolbar (or hit the Cntrl and U keys) to turn off the Underline.
  21. Type the sentence - This is how you change the font.

  22. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  23. Move your mouse to the popdown menu on the top left hand side of your toolbar.  Hold down and choose the font you would like to change it too.  You can also change the font from your Menu bar.  Simply go to Format and then to Font.  You will have the options there which allow you to change most aspects of the font.

  24. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document
  25. Go back to the popdown menu and change the font back to what it was (in this example, Arial)

  26. Type the sentence - This is how you change the font size.

  27. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  28. Move your mouse to the popdown menu on the top left hand side of your toolbar (next to the B).  Hold down and choose the font size you would like to change it too.  You can also change the font from your Menu bar.  Simply go to Format and then to Font.  You will have the options there which allow you to change most aspects of the font.

  29. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document
  30. Go back to the popdown menu and change the font size back to what it was (in this example, 12)

  31. Type the sentence - This is how you change the font color.

  32. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  33. Move your mouse to the far right corner of the toolbar, where you will see the letter A with a dark black line underneath it.  Click on the letter A and hold it down.  You will then see a palate of colors that you can change your font to.  In this example we will use red.  You can also change the font from your Menu bar.  Simply go to Format and then to Font.  You will have the options there which allow you to change most aspects of the font.

  34. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document.
  35. Go back to the letter A with the bright red line and change the font color back to what it was (in this example, black)

  36. Type the sentence - This is how you highlight text.

  37. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  38. Move your mouse to the far right corner of the toolbar, where you will see something that looks like a pen with a bright yellow line underneath it.  Click on the this icon and hold it down.  You will then see a palate of colors that you can change your font to.  In this example we will use yellow.  You can NOT change the font from your Menu bar.

  39. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document.
  40. Note - You do not have to go back to the highlight icon to turn off highlighting.  It will only color text that you specify
  41. Move your mouse to the top right hand side of your toolbar to an icon that resembles a bingo board.

  42. Hold down and drag your mouse to the size of the table you would like.   In this example, it will be 3 columns and 2 rows.   You can also add a table from your Menu bar.  Simply go to Table and then to Inset Table.  There you can type in how many columns and rows you would like.

  43. Move your mouse to the inside of the first "cell" (a cell is a box in a table) and type the text - This is cell 1 in my table.

  44. Hit the tab key and you will be moved to the next cell.  In this cell type - This is cell 2 in my table.

  45. Hit the tab key again and you will again be moved to the next cell.  In this cell type - This is cell 3 in my table.
  46. Hit the tab key again and you will again be moved to the next cell.  Notice that you will be dropped down to the next row.  In this cell type - This is cell 4 in my table.
  47. Hit the tab key again and you will again be moved to the next cell.  In this cell type - This is cell 5 in my table.
  48. Hit the tab key again and you will again be moved to the next cell.  In this cell type - This is cell 6 in my table.

  49. Move your mouse to right below the beginning of the table and click once.

  50. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document.
  51. Move your mouse to the top right hand side of your toolbar to an icon that has the numbers 1, 2, 3 on it and click on it.  You will see the number the number 1 appear.  You can also change the font from your Menu bar.  Simply go to Format and then to Bullets and Numbers.  You will have the options there which allow you to change most aspects of the numbering and bullet list.

  52. Type  - This is number 1 on my bullet list.

  53. Hit Return and type - This is number 2 on my bullet list.

  54. Hit Return twice.  This will automatically remove the bullet list.
  55. Type the sentence - This is centered text.

  56. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  57. Move your mouse to the top middle of your toolbar to an icon that has several in it without even borders on it and click on it.  The text will now be moved to the center of the page.

  58. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document
  59. Type the sentence - This is text aligned to the right.  Note, your text will still be in the center.

  60. Highlight this sentence by holding down your mouse and dragging it over this sentence.
  61. Move your mouse to the top middle of your toolbar to an icon that has several in it with borders all the way to the right and click on it.  The text will now be moved to the far right hand side of the page.

  62. Hit the return or enter key twice.  This will bring you down two lines in your document
  63. Move your mouse to the top middle of your toolbar to an icon that has several in it with borders all the way to the left and click on it.  The text will now be moved to the far left hand side of the page, where it was when we began.

  64. Now, move your mouse to the top right of your toolbar to an icon that has colored objects, such as a cylinder, triangle and square in it and click on it.  This will allow you to draw a design.

  65. Move your mouse to the very bottom of the screen.  You will see many options of what you can draw.  We will draw an oval so we will click on the icon that looks like an oval.

  66. We will then move our mouse up to the portion of the document where we want to draw an oval.  We will see cross hairs this time instead of a flashing line.
  67. Click down on the mouse and hold until you draw the kind of oval you would like.

  68. Now we will save our document.  
  69. Move your mouse to the top left of your toolbar to an icon that looks like a floppy disk and click on it.

  70. Choose where you would like to save your file, in this example to the desktop and name the file - AssignmentforWordII and hit the Enter button.

  71. Move your mouse back into the document you just saved click at the very beginning (where it says, This is where you type in text.).
  72. Once you click there, hold the button down and drag your mouse to the very bottom of the document.  This will highlight the entire document.

  73. Move your mouse to the top middle of the toolbar to an icon that looks like two pieces of paper, one behind the other and click on it.  This will copy the contents of the document.

  74. Move your mouse to the menu bar to where it says File and then move down to New.  Choose Blank Document and hit the Enter button.

  75. Move your mouse to the top middle of the toolbar to an icon that looks like a clipboard and click on it.  This will paste  the contents of the other document into this new document.

  76. Now we will save our copy.  
  77. Move your mouse to the top left of your toolbar to an icon that looks like a floppy disk and click on it.  
  78. Choose where you would like to save your file, in this example to the desktop and name the file - CopyofAssignmentforWordII and hit the Enter button.
