Regardless of the version of Microsoft Word you are using, when you open a new MS Word file you will see a screen that resembles this.

This portion of the screen (below) is called the Title bar. Here you will see the name of the program you are working on (Microsoft Word) and the name of the document you are working on (Document 1). Below is an image of the Title bar.

This portion of the screen (below) is called the Menu bar. You use the menu to give instructions to the software. Point with
your mouse to the menu option and click the left mouse button to open a drop-down
menu.

These portion of the screens (below) are called the Toolbars. Toolbars provide shortcuts to menu commands. Toolbars are generally located just below the Menu bar. Hovering your mouse over each of these icons will inform you of their function.


This portion of the screen (below) is called the Ruler. The ruler is generally found below the main toolbars. The ruler is used to change the format of your document quickly.

This portion of the screen (below) is called the Text Area. This is just below the ruler. You type your document in the text area. The blinking vertical line in the upper left corner of the text area is the cursor. It marks the insertion point. As you type, your work will show at the cursor location. The horizontal line next to the cursor marks the end of the document.

This portion of the screen (below) is called the Status bar. The Status bar appears at the very bottom of the screen and provides such information as the current page, current section, total number of pages, inches from the top of the page, current line number, and current column number.

This portion of the screen (below) are called the Horizontal and Vertical Scroll Bars . The Horizontal and Vertical scroll bars enable you to move up and down or across the window simply by pressing the icons located on the scroll bars. The Horizontal scroll bar is located above the Status bar. The Vertical scroll bar is located along the right side of the screen.
