Important Note - Due to Boston College's schedule - next week's class will be held on TUESDAY OCTOBER 12th.

----------------------

6:30pm - 7:15pm

Listen to the following audio lecture on The Learning Ladder.
The audio section below is by Professor Aaron Walsh, the originator of The Learning Ladder.

LEARNING LADDER:

Some students, because of prior experience or being in my other classes this semester, will already be "higher" on the ladder: they are able to pull others up the ladder by sharing the information they already know.

AUDIO: CLICK HERE TO HEAR THE ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

Q: What’s the difference between a roll call and “learning ladder” ?
Q: What’s, exactly, is a “learning ladder” [30min peer review at start, 30min faculty review at the end]
Q: What is “reaching down” and “reaching up” ?
Q: What does “running the ladder” mean?
Q: How do I know where I stand on the ladder?
Q: Why is voice so important?
Q: How much time does it take?
Q: Why only PASS or FAIL status reports?
Q: Who reviews my work, and why? [your team + 1 member from at least 2 other teams]
Q: What if I the people reviewing my work don’t agree on PASS or FAIL?

The “Status” area of the learning ladder is always PASS or FAIL only, with notes to explain what was not 100% at the time the ladder was run. Read the "PASS OR FAIL" bullet point below and then return to the audio whiteboard and use AUDIO chat to review the blogs of your fellow students to record a "pass" or "fail" learning ladder status for EVERY item listed under "For Next Week" in the lecture notes from last week. Use the "LEARNING LADDER STATUS" area in your roll call to record the status (pass or fail) for each student. Note that for status you can only record "pass" or "fail" along with any notes to indicate the issues when someone is listed as "fail". Having problems? Use audio chat to ask your fellow team members and classmates for assistance.

PASS OR FAIL? HOW DO YOU REVIEW YOUR FELLOW STUDENT'S ASSIGNMENTS VIA YOUR BLOGS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE ASSIGNMENTS SUCH AS "INSTALL VIRUS PROTECTION" ? THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE: SCREENSHOTS! TAKE SCREENSHOTS OF YOUR WORK AND POST THEM TO YOUR BLOG. IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED VIRUS PROTECTION, FOR EXAMPLE, YOU CAN TAKE A SCREENSHOT OF VIRUS PROTECTION RUNNING ON YOUR MACHINE OR THE INSTALLATION PROCESS. SCREENSHOTS POSTED TO YOUR BLOG ARE HOW YOU SHOW YOUR PROGRESS WITH THE PROFESSOR AND YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS.

I will meet in Audio Whiteboard to review to work with you on this first Learning Ladder based on last week's homework.

7:15pm - 8:30pm

Listen to the following Audio for information on how to read the eBook for this class. This will discuss how to read the book and which chapters you will need to read for this evening's assignments.

Section:

1.0 Internet and World Wide Web:Internet Basics and Web Based Email

and

2.0 Internet and World Wide Web: Security

Read the chapters in this section as needed to complete this week's assignment and those chapters which benefit your needs (for advanced readers).

If you have trouble with the link above - you can get to the eBook directly from here

Listen to the following Audio for information on tonight's assignments. Any assignments that are not completed during classtime must be completed for homework by next week. At least one of these must be done for Learning Ladder review at the end of class.

Blog about a personal Internet security horror story (or the best story that you know of). Then tell what precautions are taking (or will take) since that happened (or that you heard of it happening).

Blog and answer the following questions - in your own words - What is a Computer Virus? What is Virus Protection?, What is a Firewall?, Why do you need a Firewall?, What is spyware? And why would you need spyware protection?

Take a screenshot of at least one form of Internet protection on your machine (firewall, virus and/or spyware) running on your machine and upload to your blog.

8:30pm - 9:00pm

We will meet in Audio Whiteboardfor our Learning Ladder time. We will take a screenshot of the Learning Ladder and the Professor will be spot checking blogs for class review.

There will also be open discussion time.
